Senior heavyweight Mike McClure defeated Indiana's Adam Chalfant, 3-2, in the fifth-place match Saturday afternoon in the fifth session of the NCAA Wrestling Championships at Chesapeake Energy Center. McClure finishes the season with a 32-9 record and closes his career ranked 17th all-time in Michigan State history with 104 career wins and ninth with 24 falls.

The Michigan State wrestling team will host the Green-White Wrestle-Offs on Friday, Nov. 1 at I.M. West, beginning at 6:30 p.m. All of the weight classes will be in action as the Spartans tune up for the upcoming regular season. Admission is free.

Michigan State head wrestling coach Tom Minkel has announced the hiring of Sam Wendland as assistant coach. Wendland, who was a two-time NCAA qualifier at Wyoming, joined the Spartan program as a volunteer assistant last season.

Michigan State wrestling will bring in the No. 16 recruiting class in the country in 2013 according to Wrestling Insider Newsmagazine. The class of Javier Gasca (Kingsburg, Calif.), Christian Pagdilao (Corona, Calif.), Josh Pennell (St. Johns, Mich.) and Mitch Rogaliner (Temperance, Mich.) will join the Spartans for the 2013-14 campaign.

The Michigan State Spartan wrestling team, led by head coach Tom Minkel, has been recognized for its achievement in the classroom by the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA). The Spartans earned All-Academic Team honors by ranking No. 17 in the NCAA with a cumulative team GPA of 3.087. Sophomore Ryan Watts has been named NWCA Individual All-Academic team.

The NCAA Championships kicked off Thursday afternoon at the Wells Fargo Arena with first-round matches. No. 8 seed Michael McClure and senior Dan Osterman each recorded victories for MSU, while Ryan Watts and John Rizqallah each dropped their first matches.

The Michigan State wrestling team heads to the NCAA Championships this weekend (March 21-23) in Des Moines, Iowa, at Wells Fargo Arena. Dan Osterman (149 pounds), Ryan Watts (157), John Rizqallah (184) and Michael McClure (HWT) will represent MSU at the NCAA Championships. McClure is the No. 8 seed at heavyweight.
