When Michael Finger and Joanne Kennedy set out to renovate their 640-square-foot walk-up in Manhattan’s East Village, they wanted to maximize every inch of their diminutive space. Scott Oliver and Margarita McGrath of noroof architects installed a series of ingenious design solutions, including a sizable table that disappears into vertical space to make room for parties or playtime with the kids.

Israeli designer Hilla Shamia uniquely joins the materials of aluminum and wood in this Wood Casting series. Using a whole tree trunk, Shamia pours molten aluminum directly onto the wood, which burns the surface and darkens the wood. The wood gets cut up lengthwise and put into a mold to form the frame and legs of the piece.
