House and Flower Garden, about 1940 Cottons Ohio or Indiana 90 x 76 in. Collection of Eleanor Bingham Miller L2010.42.25 Grandmother's Flower Garden, a floral pattern pieced from hexagons, became one of the most popular quilt patterns of the 1920s and 1930s. The pattern name reflects the sentimentality so often associated with quilts during the period. Variations of the pattern were widely published and one could even buy pre-cut kits.

made by Maria Hester Monroe Gouverneur - she became the first daughter of a president to be married in the White House. Unfortunately the quilt was never finished. It is believed it may have been started around the time of her marriage which was in 1820. Her father John Monroe became the fifth President of the United States in 1817. From "Quilts from Virginia 1607-1899 The Birth of America Through the Eye of a Needle".
