The North Pacific humpback whales, we affectionately refer to as our “gentle giants”, are back in Maui waters! The humpbacks begin their migration approximately 3,000 miles from the cold arctic waters to the warm waters of Hawaii, to mate, give birth to their calves, and rear their young. The shallow waters surrounding Maui are known as the “cradle of the humpback” due to the significant number of humpbacks raised in this area.
Time for a short break in your day! Here's an awesome video of 2 humpback whales that surrounded the Queen's Treasure catamaran a few days ago off Kaanapali Beach. The video was taken by friend and Lahaina videographer, Brandon Pinard, using a GoPro extended on a long stick, under the water! Turn up the volume to hear these gentle giants singing and check out how close one of the whales gets to the GoPro (at 3:02 minutes).
