I made brooms like this as a child (Girl Scouts is a wonderful thing). I still make them! Every fall season from branch clippings to use in the yard to sweep up leaves that rakes leave behind and to clean up hard to rake areas. Works wonders!
Use terrycloth fingertip towels instead of napkins. Washable, practically indestructible, and available in lots of colors and patterns!
Recycled self-watering planters. An easier one for kiddos could be made with plastic bottles.
