Are ashes good for compost?
YES. They should be composted and not dropped directly on the garden. They are too acidic for direct dispersal (if you are referring to ash from a woodstove or pellet stove).

You can also add the paper from your shredder (it will break down pretty fast) and I throw in old cotton socks and bits from old wool sweaters. It all composts pretty well.
