1st Alabama Cavalry. In the entry for February 13, 1862, Pickett noted that there was a "flag presentation to the 1st Ala. Cav. Vol at Capitol, Montgomery Ala. Battle flag made by ladies, presented with address by Gov. John Gill Shorter. Received by Col. J. H. Clanton."
22nd Alabama Infantry. According to Christopher Bailey, who had served with Co. H, 22nd Alabama Infantry, the first flag received by the regiment was a silk banner presented in October or November 1861 by the ladies of Montgomery. He also claimed that a second flag was presented in May or June 1862, when the regiment was passing through Montgomery, and that this flag was captured at the Battle of Chickamauga, which bears embroidered battle honors for Shiloh and Murfreesboro, Jan1, 1863).
