Mitts 1830s- unknown (Country). Black lacy silk knit with embroidery of metal beads. These mitts, reaching to just below the bend of the elbow, have a geometric knit pattern and they are decorated with shiny beads. Because they allow fingers to be freely moved, mitts are more functional than gloves. They became popular in the late 18th century. Some fashion plates of the period depict women embroidering or reading when wearing such mitts. Kyoto Costume Institute.
