Actually it's not the same snake. The snake in the first book was a male boa, whereas Nagini was a viper of some kind. Remember when she bit Arthur? And she lashed out and struck Snape rather than constricting him. I honestly think it is far more likely that Nagini is the daughter of the basilisk that guarded the Chamber.
Uh, you do realize that JK Rowling herself said that it's the same snake?
