Earthships use recycled material as building materials but most of us just use recycled or up cycled material where we can, and to save money. I bought these gigantic file drawers at the local Habitat for Humanity ReStore (this is one of my favorite places to shop – I bought a bunch of old cabinet doors to finish off the coop there too) several weeks ago to use as planters. All three of them were only $5 and look interesting against the side of the garage.

Cute coop-Great idea for an old kids playhouse (up-cycle)

Much larger than we'd need, but I love the drop down door for egg collecting and the storage on the side. Cute! My neighbors would think I built a playhouse :)

Trash to Treasure: old dresser drawers are rectangular planters

Surrounded by raised garden beds, this deluxe chicken coop has what it takes to keep chickens safe, healthy and laying fresh eggs: a minimum 4-by-8 foot screened-in run and a 4-by-4 foot critter-proof coop for up to three hens. | Photo: Matthew Benson |

An old chest of drawers as a coop.

Thinking I might do this on top of the chicken coop!! What a great way to keep them cooler in the summer and warm in the winter!!!
