Hand-stitched buttons workshop at Stag and Bow run by textile artist Debby Brown. Debby treated us to a history of Dorset Buttons and we had a look through her fabulous textile sketchbook. Each of us made a hand stitched button on a curtain ring. Experienced workers in the 18th century used to make a gross (144) buttons per day. We would need to speed up a bit to meet those output levels! Children used to make buttons at home and at depots. The picture shows the button I complete
Gonks! Originated after WWI when teddy bears stopped being imported and textiles were at a shortage. Mothers got inventive with any scraps they could find to make playthings for their children. I should like to make some from the kids baby clothes and blankets.
