May 20, 1896. Disaster at the Paris Opera House. Accounts are not quite clear as to what happened at the Palais Garnier. The massive, 6-ton chandelier may have fallen, or it may have been only a 700 pound counterweight. One person was killed -- and the event inspired Gaston Leroux, who used the Opera House as the setting of his classic novel, The Phantom of the Opera. Photograph by Eric Pouhier.
