Lincoln & Lerner's Belleville, IL While this isn't a particularly good shot of any one thing, I liked the play of the late-afternoon shadows. By the way, that hasn't been a Lerner store for years, but hey! It costs money to take a sign down. UPDATE: Lerner's, which had been operating in Belleville since the mid to late 1920s, moved into this location in the mid-'60s. It was still in business as late as 1998. As of early 2009, the Lerner's sign has finally been removed.

IL-Belleville-Lincoln Theater '96 Lincoln Theater Belleville, IL Incredibly, the independent Lincoln Theater has outlived two chain-run cinemas in Belleville. Credit owner Richard Wright, who learned a thing or two during his many years running chain cinemas himself. Since this photo was taken, the Lincoln has undergone a facelift to return the first-floor facade to something akin to its original appearance.
IL-Belleville-Lincoln Theater '98 Lincoln Theater Belleville, IL Here you can get a good idea of what the Lincoln looked like between (I'm estimating) 1960 and 2000. The first floor was stuccoed over and the storefronts were given a mid-century-modern makeover. Not long after this pic was taken, a crew began painstakingly trying to return the Lincoln to its original 1921 appearance. So far, they haven't messed with the funky, eccentric marquee.
