He Documented Atrocities (1943) Sgt. William A Scott, III -- was a military photographer with the 183rd Engineer Combat Battalion Concentration Camp.His photographs recorded African-American soldiers at the liberation of the Buchenwald concentration camp. Scott's pictures are now part of a video record of the liberation of Buchenwald on display at the U.S. Holocaust Museum in Washington, D.C.
Cecil Williams in the 1950s - and today. I thought about his searing, beautiful picture from the 1950s today in light of recent events. Mr. Williams happens to be a photographer himself, but this iconic photo was probably taken by his mentor, John Goodwin, who joined him for a talk at Richland Library in Columbia, SC in Sept 2013 about their experiences as black photographers in SC during Jim Crow and the Civil Rights era. An Orangeburg, SC native, worked for JET when he was only 15.
