In short : During a home football game against Ole Miss in the early 1900’s a Jersey cow ran onto the football field during halftime. MSU came back to beat the Rebels. For good luck during games after that, they brought the cow back, until they finally made the decision to bring just the cow’s bell. The bells caught on, and in the early 60’s, two MSU engineering professors welded handles onto the cowbells for more efficient ringing.
