16th century vizard, a lady's mask made from paper with an outer layer of black velvet and an inner lining of silk. The vizard had no straps; a bead attached to the mouth hole would be held between the wearer's teeth to keep the mask on the face. Its purpose was to prevent tanning and sunburn when travelling. Phillip Stubbes wrote in 1583: "[A man] would think hee met a monster or a devil; for face he can see none, but two brode holes against her eyes with glasses in them"
