The Constellations for Each Month of the Year - Atlas of the Heavens, Elijah Burritt 1856a

Methuselah Nebula MWP1: Beautiful Methuseleh, in the constellation Cygnus, is a mere 150 thousand years old, a cosmic blink of the eye but far older than the average nebula which lasts 10 - 20 thousand years. (Planetary nebulae are the brief final phase of stellar evolution as the central star shrugs off its outer layers to become a hot white dwarf.)

This sharp cosmic portrait features glowing gas and obscuring dust clouds in IC 1795, a star forming region in the northern constellation Cassiopeia. Also cataloged as NGC 896, the nebula's remarkable details, shown in its dominant red color, were captured using a sensitive camera, and long exposures that include image data from a narrowband filter.
