The Great Peacemaker founded the Haudenosaunee, aka the Iroquois Confederacy, a union of several Native American tribes residing in today's Upstate NY. The Peacemaker symbolically uprooted a white pine tree & the people were asked to throw weapons of war into the pit where the tree had been and replanted the tree. It's referred to as The Great Tree of Peace. The Peacemaker placed an eagle atop The Great Tree of Peace to be a guardian who warns of any danger to the peace of the Haudenosaunee.
