Historical-documents projects are looking to crowdsourcing for help in getting archives online. But is the crowd up to the task?

Good article in the Chronicle of Higher Ed profiling a crowdsourced transcription project at George Mason's Center for History and New Media. Also cites a paper evaluating the efficiency and effectiveness of a crowdsourced transcription project at the University of London (The Bentham Project). Mixed results: some projects find staff spend so much time supervising, volunteers don't speed the project. Others feel it does pay off in time, or is worth the other benefits (e.g., building community).
