Roger Clegg: Hadrian’s Wall, Northumberland, UK Was a defensive fortification in Roman Britain. Begun in 122 AD, during the rule of emperor Hadrian, it was the first of two fortifications built across Great Britain, the second being the Antonine Wall. A common misconception that Hadrian’s wall marks the boundary btwn England & Scotland. This is not the case; Hadrian’s wall lies entirely within England & south of the border with Scotland.

The remains of the Antonine Wall. The Antonine Wall was the northernmost barrier of the Roman Empire and ran for approximately 39 miles across the central belt of Scotland. It was abandoned after only 20 years when Roman soldiers retreated to Hadrian’s Wall.
