Madonna of the Lilies 1905 tempera on canvas 247 x 182 In 1902 Mucha was asked to decorate a church in Jerusalem dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The project was later cancelled but not before Mucha had created this painting. Mucha called the subject Virgo purissima and surrounded the heavenly vision of the Madonna with a mass of lilies, symbol of purity.
