"Juan de Pareja" about 1650, in Rome. Velasquez' painted this portrait of his Moorish slave about 4 years before he freed him. de Pareja was an assistant in the painter's workshop & became a painter himself. Velázquez clearly intended to impress his Italian colleagues. We are told that the picture "gained such universal applause that in the opinion of all the painters of the different nations everything else seemed like painting but this alone like truth."
