John Harper, passenger on theTitanic with his daughter and niece - #16 Harper was a Baptist preacher on his way to the U.S. with daughter and niece. On the tragic night, he put them in a lifeboat before he perished.

On Oct. 18, 1898, the 10th Cavalry, returning from Cuba and the Spanish-American War, stopped in Huntsville, Alabama, making camp near the present-day intersection of Pulaski Pike and University Drive. The Buffalo Soldiers, under the command of 1st. Lt. John “Black Jack” Pershing, stayed until Jan. 28, 1899, making such an impression on the city that residents dubbed the site Cavalry Hill. In 1958, Cavalry Hill School opened and today the school is home to the Academy for Academics and Arts.
