On Oct. 18, 1898, the 10th Cavalry, returning from Cuba and the Spanish-American War, stopped in Huntsville, Alabama, making camp near the present-day intersection of Pulaski Pike and University Drive. The Buffalo Soldiers, under the command of 1st. Lt. John “Black Jack” Pershing, stayed until Jan. 28, 1899, making such an impression on the city that residents dubbed the site Cavalry Hill. In 1958, Cavalry Hill School opened and today the school is home to the Academy for Academics and Arts.
