A rare picture of the actual process of burning bodies at Auschwitz/Birkenau. Taken clandestinely, and at great risk, by a member of the Sonderkommando (special detail, or special command), it shows other Sonderkommando burning the bodies of gassed inmates. Often, they burned the bodies of friends and family. Given preferential treatment during their work, they usually lasted less than a month, being gassed to prevent their giving witness to the atrocities committed at the camp.
