1880-90’s Melon-Style Vintage Football. This is a very unique, vintage football. This exceptional, melon football dates from the 1880's to the 1890's. It was unearthed in the confines of the historic Girard College of Philadelphia. This is one of the finest footballs we have handled in all of our 19, almost 20 years! It remains wonderfully plump and is constructed of high grade leather that remains soft and supple. It's almost spherical appearance is something seen on the very early cabinet foot

The pants have a front fly with metal grommets for lacing. Pads are sewn inside front and back hips and front at knees. Thigh fronts have inserted vertical rods, probably wood. The helmet is lined with cotton batting. Gift of the Estate of Emily S. McCrady (Robert’s sister) in 1975
