Although an example of an elongated coin is rumored to have been produced some years earlier, it is generally accepted that these tokens were first made during the 1892-1893 Worlds Columbian Exposition that was held in Chicago, Illinois to commemorate the 400th anniversary of Columbuss discovery of America. There were four different designs utilized during that event.
Pressed pennies – or elongated coins – are keepsake coins that have been flattened and embossed with another design. They were first seen in 1893, issued by private entities as commemorative memorabilia at world fairs and expositions. This practice continued until 1985 when commercial coin-operated elongated press machines were introduced and caused a boom in contemporary elongated coins, like this Sesame Street Characters penny press at the Universal Studios in Singapore.

Canadian pennies prior to 1997 were approximately 98% copper and 1.75 % zinc. So, a pre-1997 Canadian penny (aside from being illegal to smash in Canada) should give you a decent result after elongating. Note: Do not attempt to elongate a "Loonie" (the non-round coin). It will squish far too short and you will loose part of the design.
