Chinese culture uses tea to communicate hospitality. When a Chinese host pours a cup of tea, the glass will often not be full, but each time the host refills the glass, they will pour the tea a little higher. When the host fills the cup, this serves as a sign to the guest that it is time to go, and thus, the guest will finish the glass and leave. It is in this way that hot beverages can be visual cues for conversation.
