Modernist String Chair by Carl Koch USA 1950s Great mid-century design by Boston architect Carl Koch for Tubbs of Vermont. Tubbs produced snow shoes in the mid-19th century, and later made innovative chairs out of the very same snow shoes in the early 20th century. This modern design reduces the concept even further into a strikingly simple and economical update.
Shell Chair Designed by Hans J. Wegner for Carl Hansen & Son The son of a shoemaker, Hans Wegner was trained as a cabinetmaker and architect. He studied at Copenhagen’s School of Arts and Crafts, which led to a job with Arne Jacobsen, designer of the Egg™ Chair, creating furniture for the new Århus City Hall. Wegner started his own design office, and in 1949, his light, sculptural forms caught the eye of the folks at Carl Hansen & Son.
