Teri, so if I find a 50 year old cast iron pan in my grandmas basement all nasty and covered in crud like this one in the picture, you're saying its wrong to clean it and I should just use it? ewwww gross, i hope you dont have guests to eat at your house.
My mother just handed me down 3 rust covered ones from my grandmother ..... Can they be restored???
I agree with Teri, except I believe if it's past a year or so you should clean it down & start over again!!
Um...you definitely want to remove the carbon build up from cast iron once it's gotten bad, or in Alexis' case when inherited and has been stored in a basement for years. After removing it can always be seasoned without a problem.
