In the catacombs beneath the Capuchin monastery of Palermo, Sicily, fully clothed cadavers may be found propped upright or hanging from the walls. These are friars, priests, and other clergymen.

Capuchin's Catacombs in Palermo

Corpses stacked on display in the Capuchin Crypt, Palermo, Sicily, Italy I have always found different burial customs fascinating, but this and the Catacombs are really macabre to me.

This photo of Rosalia Lombardo was taken in 1984. Why is that interesting? She was the last person buried in the catacombs of the Capuchin Monastery 64 years before this photo was taken, in 1920.

Rosalia Lombardo was born in 1918 in Palermo, Sicily. She died on December 6 1920. It is thought that she died from a bronchial infection. Rosalia's father was sorely grieved upon her death that he approached Dr. Alfredo Salafia, a noted embalmer, to preserve her. She was one of the last corpses to be admitted to the Capuchin catacombs of Palermo in Sicily.
