Sophia B. Packard and Harriet E. Giles founded the first college for black women in the United States in 1881. The school was named Spelman College after Laura Celestia Spelman Rockefeller, the wife of John D. Rockefeller, who made a sizeable donation to the school.
Spelman History is Women's History: Pamela Gunter-Smith, Ph.D., C'73 -- Pamela Gunter-Smith, Ph.D., has been selected to serve as York College's fourth president beginning July 1, 2013. She will be the first female and the first minority chosen for the position. Gunter-Smith has served as provost and academic vice president at Drew University in Madison, N.J., since 2006. She also served as the Porter Professor of Physiology at Spelman College from 1992-2006.
