My daughter got stung by one of these when she was little and she was in so much pain. Turns out, if you get stung, you should put a piece of super sticky tape over the spot, making sure it really sticks, then pull it off. This removes all the little spines that you can't even see. It will not stop hurting until they have been removed. It instantly made her feel better. I wish we had known that at the get-go so she wouldn't have been in pain for a a couple hours!
@Molly Tatro: Thanks!
good to know
My brother was stung by one of these, had to go to the er he was in so much pain. nasty little buggers!
@Molly Tatro Your poor girl!!! And great advice if I ever encounter one of these buggers.
I have been stung by one of these pretty critters! Crazy painful!
My son was stung by one of these - when irritated it turns a red color - freaky
I am 35 and have lived in the south my whole life and have never seen one of these which is probably a good thing cuz i probably would have tried to play with it as a child lol
I saw one of these and couldn't figure out what it was. Good thing I didn't touch it.
He didn't even realize it was on his neck until we got home and he pulled his shirt off - that irritated it and it stung him - we had to google to find out what the ,,,,,,, it was.
When I was little I was stung by three of them, I had to go to the hospital because I couldn't stop crying. So painful!
Beware of any catepillar with long "fur" or spines.
we have only had them invade onec in all my years in Texas and my 5yr old daughter stepped on one and it sent her to the er! The fur covers the hard spines-they are really pretty but you should really leave them alone.
painful sting is an understatement...i got stung under my toes and thought i was going to die
Never thought of caterpillars as dangerous - but thankful my kids got me to look this one up before they took it off the pecan tree!
Fluffy but deadly lol
@colleen webb...your favorite!
I was pruning roses and thought it was a dead leaf; grabbed it & pulled it off the bush. Pain was instantaneous & severe and ran all the way up my arm. First aid involves placing tape over the spines to lift them out -- scraping just breaks them off.
In Texas we call them an Asp. Cute little guys that pack a punch!
This moth arises from the Jewel Caterpillar.
