Tavarua, the small, heart-shaped island in the Fijian archipelago, has two of the world’s most sought-after waves, Cloudbreak and Restaurants. Since 1984, access to them had been controlled by the Tavarua Island Resort (tavarua.com). But last year, Fiji’s military dictatorship put an end to the hotel’s exclusive rights, to the delight of local Fijians and international surfers, who have begun boating to the breaks from neighboring islands. Look for other resorts to spring up nearby and take advantage of the new access.
