Yuri Gagarin (March 9 1934 – March 27 1968) was a Soviet pilot and cosmonaut. He was the first human to journey into outer space, when his Vostok spacecraft completed an orbit of the Earth on April 12,1961.

Yuri Gagarin made history in 1961 when, aged just 27, he became the first man to journey into space. His single Earth orbit on April 12 lasted 108 minutes and was one of the Soviet Union's most enduring Cold War victories.

This flight test mannequin is Ivan Ivanovich ("John Doe"). Ivan orbited the Earth on March 23, 1961, to test the pressure suit and spacecraft used by Yuri Gagarin weeks later when he became the first man in space. Ivan has remained inside his spacesuit since his flight in 1961.
