Edward P. "Ed" McMahon Jr. (1923-2009). Capt., U.S. Marine Corps, 1943-45, 52-53, WW II & Korean War. Served as a Corsair fighter pilot instructor in WW II, then flew 85 artillery-spotting missions over Korea in a Cessna Bird Dog earning 6 Air Medals. He was later promoted to colonel in the reserves, and BrigGen in the Calif Nat'l Guard.
Glenn Ford (né Gwyllyn Ford in Canada) (1916-2006) SGT USMC (1942-44) WW II / CAPT USNR (1958-70s) During his WW II service he helped build safe houses in France for those hiding from the Nazis. He went to Vietnam in 1967 for combat scenes in a Marine training film. He earned a Navy Commendation Medal and the French Legion of Honor Medal. Memorable roles included many western characters, and Richard Dadier in “Blackboard Jungle”.
Nadezhda Popova was a Russian female pilot during WWII. The German military called her one of the "Nachthexen", or "Night Witches" She flew 852 decoy missions in a canvas winged plane. Dropped food and medicine to Russian marines trapped on the beach at Malaya Zemlya. She had to fly so low that she heard their cheers. After the mission, she found 42 bullet holes in her plane.She died on July 8, 2013 at the age of 91
