Texas has 14 native grape species with the most common in the Houston area being Mustang and Muscadine. Both turn blackish when they are ripe and have thick skins that you can squeeze to pop out the juicy part. Mustangs are mostly used in wine and jelly making because they are so acidic you can hardly eat them. Muscadines are much sweeter and grow higher in the trees.
