The Book Thief by Markus Zusak. This is a story about a girl in WWII Germany who steals books before they can be burned and shares them with her neighbors and a Jewish man who is hidden in her basement. The story is narrated by Death and is appropriately dark, but manages to be uplifting at the same time. This is in my top 5 books of all time.

"I can get books." "You're running a risk." "That's the good part of dying; when you have nothing to lose, you run any risk you want."

Matilda by Roald Dahl | Just read it to my daughter...appreciated it even more this time around!
