Genie was locked in her bedroom by her father, because he thought she was mentally retarded. He beat her every time she vocalized. She was discovered when her mother ran away from her him and took Genie with her. Scientists tried to make her speak and teach her sign language and were slightly succesful in doing so. After that she was placed in several foster homes, where she was abused physically and emotionally. She never spoke again.
