Genie was born in California in 1957. She was locked in a bedroom by her father for 12 years after she was diagnosed as developmentally delayed. Tied to a potty chair during the day, and at night she was bound in a sleeping bag and put in a crib covered a metal screen. His wife and son were not allowed to speak to her and he beat her every time she vocalized. By 13 she could only speak about 20 words, all negative. Genie was discovered when her mother ran away from her husband and took her.
