Tattoo Legacy (Dunlop, T. 2012)
"His [Cook's] men were among the first Europeans to acquire Polynesian tattoos, setting a trend that eventually spread through the Royal Navy." The explosion of exploration in the 18th century saw Westerners coming across tribes from Polynesia, stunned by the tattoos that many Polynesians wore. Sailors saw this symbolism and expanded upon it with their own profession and culture. Soon, tattoos became just as functional as they were aesthetic - if a sailor's life was lost, his shipmates would be able to identify him by his tattoo. (Dunlop, T. 2012)
