Times Square... Before Times Square

On December 31, 1904, the first New Year’s Eve celebration is held in Times Square (formerly Longacre Square). It was organized by the owners of the New York Times newspaper to celebrate their move to the newly-completed Times Tower at One Times Square. The event was marked with rooftop fireworks, but the organizers wanted something bigger and better. In 1907, they constructed a lit ball that they lowered from the flagpole at One Times Square, a tradition that stands today.
