These columns are a part of the Baldachinno at St. Peter's designed by Bernini. Classified as Solomnic columns, these lesser known elements are characterized by their curving figure which twists up from base to capital. I took a course in Baroque history of architecture but was not aware that this movement revived these types of columns. The spiraling curves seem to match Baroque's heavy use of concave and convex curvatures.
