FYEAHTATTOOS: I’m both a graphic designer and a feminist—I wanted my first tattoo to be political, but not some cliche, recognizable symbol. I first got the idea for the pomegranate while doing research on the history of birth control and abortion. In ancient times, pomegranates were used by women as a semi-effective birth control (it contains many hormones similar to The Pill) along with other herbs and plants. The fruit Eve ate? Until medieval times, it was a pomegranate. The pomegranate was in Greek myths, too. And all of this knowledge is older than agriculture! To me, this history is “key” to understanding how deeply rooted birth control (including abortion) is in women’s biology and history. Also, see if you can spot the hidden uterus and ovaries! (My tattoo is also like a sweet i-spy game.) ***Tattoo by the amazing Elize Nazelie of Boston Tattoo Co.

Story: My first tattoo is simple but means a lot. My mom has medical tattoos in the same spots where my circles are. They were from radiation treatment for breast cancer. She is fine now and has been for over seven years now. So I guess you could call us tattoo twins. My mom was right next to me when I got it today, and I held her hand throughout the tattoo process. Ross Trimmer at Salvation Tattoo Gallery in Richmond, Virginia did this for me today, and he was a really great guy!
