Henry I, King of England - The fourth son of William the Conqueror, Henry succeeded his elder brother William II as King in 1100 and defeated his eldest brother, Robert Curthose, to become Duke of Normandy in 1106. He married Princess Matilda of Scotland to unite the Normans and Saxons. Generation 30 on our family tree.
My 29th Great-Grandfather, Henry I, King of England. (c. 1068/1069 – 1 December 1135) the fourth son of William I of England. He succeeded his elder brother William II as King of England in 1100 and defeated his eldest brother, Robert Curthose, to become Duke of Normandy in 1106. A later tradition called him Beauclerc for his scholarly interests.
After Henry I’s death in 1135, Civil War raged in England between the Empress Matilda and King Stephen (1135-1154). Nottingham Castle was held for Stephen by its constable William Peveril, probably the great grandson of the original builder. Robert Earl of Gloucester, the natural son of Henry I, laid siege to the Castle in 1140, took William’s son prisoner, but failed to capture the Castle.
Matilda of Flanders, wife of William the Conqueror and mother of Henry I, the first woman to be crowned Queen of England, was born in 1031. Her father, Baldwin V, was the Count of Flanders, and her mother Adela, was a daughter Robert II the Pious Capet, King of France.
