German craftsman and designer MICHAEL THONET (1796 - 1871), born in Boppard, can be considered the great creator of the techniques of bending wood. His Vienna factory produced 400,000 units annually and Thonet achieved extraordinary fame, while even today his work is constantly imitated. The great success of his furniture began in 1851 on the occasion of the "Exhibition of London". Among various models highlights is the famous chair Number 14 designed in 1859.

One style of antique rocking chair (Bentwood Rocker) was manufactured by the Thonet Brothers Manufacturers in Vienna, Austria during the mid-1800s. They bent soft beech wood to form their furniture. Thonet rockers are valuable and their designs are widely copied, both in antiques and contemporary chairs.

Thonet Chair nr.1 - In 1849 Thonet again founded an establishment of his own, the Gebrüder Thonet. In 1850 he produced his Nr 1 chair. The World's Fair in London 1851 saw him receive the bronze medal for his Vienna bentwood chairs. This was his international breakthrough. At the next World's Fair in Paris 1855, he was awarded the silver medal as he continued to improve his production methods.
