This is a picture of Fort Caspar. It is located in Casper, Wyoming. It was one of the multiple military forts where the Pony Express established a check station for the riders. Riders just crossed a bridge over the North Platte river and, viola, there they were at the check station. The fort is actually named after Lieutenant Casper Collins when he died in the battle of Platte Bridge in 1865.

Ancient mammals such as the rhino, horse, and saber-toothed cat once roamed here. The park’s 244,000 acres protect an expanse of mixed-grass prairie where bison, bighorn sheep, prairie dogs, and black-footed ferrets live today.
