Nadezhda Popova was a Russian female pilot during WWII. The German military called her one of the "Nachthexen", or "Night Witches" She flew 852 decoy missions in a canvas winged plane. Dropped food and medicine to Russian marines trapped on the beach at Malaya Zemlya. She had to fly so low that she heard their cheers. After the mission, she found 42 bullet holes in her plane.She died on July 8, 2013 at the age of 91

Irena Sendler 1910-2008 In WWII Irena worked in the Warsaw Ghetto as a plumbing specialist & smuggled Jewish children out in tool boxes & burlap sacks. She had a dog trained to bark when Nazis were near. Irena saved the life of 2500 children. She was caught & the Nazis severely beat her braking her arms & legs. She kept a record of the names of all the kids she smuggled out & after the war she tried to reunite them with their families or a new family. A noble nominee she lost, to Al Gore.
