Victorian women were the symbol of grace and elegance. They were expected to be dainty lady's and hold a family together. Usually you can only be good at one. An example of someone who could only maintain one of these roles is Belinda from Great Expectations. She left her maids to raise her family. She presented herself as a Victorian angel and wore the nicest things but was not a good mother.
