Metabolic Acidosis. Relative excess of any acid but carbonic, by reduction in base, increase in acid, or both. Clinical manifestations: headache, abdominal pain, CNS depression caused by decreased pH of cerebrospinal fluid and interstitial fluid of the brain. Death from brainstem dysfunction occurs when pH falls below 6.9. The respiratory compensation for metabolic acidosis is hyperventilation. Changes ratio of bicarbonate ions to carbonic acid in a favorable direction.
