Knox House/Old Hickory Tavern: Abandoned Home in Coudersport PA
The Knox House This house has a checkerboard history. Originally built by lawyer and railroad magnate F. W. Knox, it also housed the Old HIckory Tavern, which Eliot Ness frequented after retiring to the city. More recently, a company wanted to turn it into a Bed & Breakfast, but their bankruptcy put an end to that idea. At this point, its future is unsure, which is sad, considering what a splendid building it is.
The Knox house in Coudersport, PA. was owned by F.W. Knox, a prominent businessman in Coudersport and president of the Coudersport & Port Allegany Railroad. Mr. Knox died in 1884. Many years later, the house was turned into a bar and hotel known as the "Old Hickory," and was open for over 30 years before falling vacant again. This picture was taken in the 1990s.
