Holliwell Covered Bridge Built in 1880 by Benton Jones, it is the longest covered bridge, measuring 122 feet. It remains in its original site over the Middle River southeast of Winterset. Holliwell was renovated in 1995 at a cost of $225,000. It is featured in The Bridges of Madison County movie.

I have always liked covered bridges. This one reminds me of some of the ones that have been washed away in Vermont due to the heavy rain/flooding caused by Hurricane Irene (August 2011).

Indiana is full of Covered Bridges. We even have a Covered Bridge Festival that runs for 2 weeks in Parke County. Thousands of people visit it each year.

The wind and rain bridges were a type of bridge built by the Dong people in China. Because they live in the lowlands and the valleys with many rivers, the Dong people are excellent bridge builders. They are called “wind and rain” bridges because the covered bridges not only let people cross the river, but also protect them from the elements.
